Sylvia is a three-act ballet that is inspired by characters from mythology. The ballet is set to music by French composer Lo Delibes and premiered at the Palais Garnier in Paris in 1876. The story is based on a play called Aminta written by Torquato Tasso – an Italian poet. On its’ debut this ballet was not well received and it was performed less and less often, as it did not prove to be popular with audiences.

The choreographer and dancer Sir Kenneth MacMillan was born on 11 December 1929 in Dunfermline, Scotland and died in 1992 of a heart attack. Although a talented dancer himself MacMillan was always more comfortable in the role of choreographer. Hailing from a working class family he grew up in North Norfolk when his family moved there from Scotland. He first started dancing at the age of 12 and the naturally gifted dancer was accepted by the Sadler’s Wells ballet as it was called then at the age of 15.

A bodhran is an Irish frame drum including 25 to 65 cm in diameter, primarily drums measuring 35 to 45 cm. The sides of the drum are 9 to 20 cm deep. A goatskin head is tacked to one side with artificial heads, and several other animal skins are sometimes employed. The other part is open ended just for a single hand to be positioned from inside of the drum head to control the pitch and timbre.
