The Godfather: The story begins as “Don” Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia “family”, oversees his daughter’s wedding. His beloved son Michael has just come home from the war, but does not intend to become part of his father’s business. Through Michael’s life the nature of the family business becomes clear. The business of the family is just like the head of the family, kind and benevolent to those who give respect, but given to ruthless violence whenever anything stands against the good of the family. Don Vito lives his life in the way of the old country, but times are changing and some don’t want to follow the old ways and look out for community and “family”. An up and coming rival of the Corleone family wants to start selling drugs in New York, and needs the Don’s influence to further his plan. The clash of the Don’s fading old world values and the new ways will demand a terrible price, especially from Michael, all for the sake of the family.

Beginner’s Greek by James Collins: Peter, though, is the catalyst for this novel, and his struggle to do the right thing and behave the correct way often gets in the way of his own happiness. When James Collins is moving the novel through Peter’s actions and frustrations, the romantic comedy skips along its merry path. For the most part, Beginner’s Greek is an enjoyable romp of the heart and mind. It’s not completely believable, but that’s not necessary. It’s about love, true love, and how it can overcome all obstacles. That’s what we all want to believe in. Right? Well, at least it’s true in Beginner’s Greek and we should enjoy it while we can.

If you are the kind of person that needs to see a movie that is plausible, and based on real life events, then you probably shouldn’t see “Crank: High Voltage,” starring Jason Statham. However, if you like movies that are completely over the top when it comes to action, dialogue, story lines, and an occasional porn star thrown in for good measure, then this flick is not to be missed.

One favorite movie genre of many is that of alien invasion. We lowly people on Earth must overcome our petty differences to deal with a force much stronger than us. Many times the invading alien armies are a metaphor for our collective fears, such as nuclear Holocaust or environmental disaster. The remake of “The Day The Earth Stood Still,” is no different. It packs a powerful entertainment punch, and provides an important message as well.
