The key ingredient in natural soap products is glycerin soap. Glycerin should be the type that you can melt and pour. This quality makes using soap molds easier. Glycerin product can be purchased in a clear version or in white. Clear glycerin is great if you want to be able to see the herbal and other additives that you add to the product.

You can add essential oils to the glycerin to produce unique results. If you have dry skin, you can add orange oils. For soap that soothes, try lavender oils. Citrus oils invigorate the whole system. Rosemary essential oils improve circulation. You can find essential oils online or at the hobby or craft store. The oils that you use should be pure, since fragrance oils dry the skin.

Other things that you can add to the glycerin to improve the performance and appearance of the soap include Vitamin E oil, soap color and herbs or flowers. Some people like to add colored soap chips or sparkles. All these items are available at craft or hobby establishments. Handmade soap makes a great gift idea.

The actual process of soap making at home begins by using a double boiler to melt the glycerin. Once the glycerin has reached liquid form, you can add the fragrances, herbs and other decorative ingredients. The mixture is then poured into the molds you select. Soap molds, candy molds and molds from other household items are great for mixing creative color, shape and aromatic options.

The liquid soap mixture should remain in the molds for 2 to 4 hours until it has time to cool and harden. The solid soap forms are removed from the molds and stored in a dry place. By learning how to make natural homemade soap, you will never be at a loss for a gift.

  1. Hey Eugene, Thanks for the article! I think it would be fair and responsible to warn your readers of the dangers of essential oils. Much research should go into using them. There’s a large percentage of people that are allergic to Rosemary and it’s not recommended for pregnant women. I’m not trying to scare anyone off from the wonderful feeling you get from making soap by hand, but there’s more to it than just throwing in some ingredients and “giving” it away. You wouldn’t want to give someone a gift that’s going to make them sick. Thanks for allowing the post, Ken
